The University of Texas Fencing Club

2020 was a tough year for the University of Texas Fencing Club. After losing two graduating classes and barely retaining one recruiting class, I took charge of the effort to rebuild our club.
From tournament graphics to tabling on campus to responding to direct messages on our Instagram and overhauling our website, I put in the work to build the largest recruiting class of record to date for UTFC and bring the team back together.
Graphic Design
During my time at Texas Football and working under the amazingly talented Matt Lange, I came into contact with the world of sports graphics. So I ended up giving @texasfencing a little bit of a visual upgrade--both as a way to hone my abilities and up the prestige of the club.
Anytime there was a tournament, fundraiser, or even just a milestone that inspired me, I put something together that I was excited to show off. Below are the season recap swipes I put together to announce to all of our fans cool stats and records our team has.
One of the challenges of designing for Texas Fencing was providing and depicting information in a way where people would understand fencing. Unlike football where the system of scoring, winning, etc. is relatively well known, fencing... not so much.
Absolutely nailed the Instagram swiping with these. I think you can also see a pretty drastic evolution of the quality of these. Let me know if you have a favorite.
Team Photoshoot
As a part of my effort to brand the team more like an NCAA program than a college club, I brought together my Canon EOS 80D, a solid orange background, lights I rented from equipment checkout at the UT film school, and more than half the members of the club to capture the majesty and aesthetic of the sport of fencing.
Used for team graphics or just for fencers to post on Instagram, this was a huge success. Here are a few of my favorites.
